What to Pack for Your Hocking Hills Cabin Vacation

Fireside LodgeRenting a Hocking Hills cabin for your family vacation this summer? You are in for a treat—get ready to make memories that will last a lifetime. Our Hocking Hills cabins are fully equipped, but there are still some things you’ll want to bring with you to make your vacation as awesome as possible.

Here are 25 things to put on your packing list for your Hocking Hills summer vacation:

  1. Food items. You will probably want to do your shopping at the local farmers markets and grocery stores, but pack things like salt, pepper, and other spices; vinegars and oils; condiments; and other standard ingredients you might not want to purchase separately.
  2. Foil, plastic wrap, and Ziplock bags. Bring your own food storage supplies.
  3. Napkins and paper towels. The cabins come equipped with kitchen linens, but not napkins or paper towels, which you can really never have too many of anyway.
  4. Coffee. Bring your own supplies for your morning cuppa joe. If you take cream and sugar in your coffee, bring them too.
  5. Knives. The cabins have knives, but if you are picky about your cutting implements, it’s best to bring your own.
  6. Specialty kitchen tools. If you’ll be wanting a lemon zester, avocado slicer, or other specialty kitchen tools, bring them with you.
  7. Corkscrew. Just to be safe, you never know when you will need one on a romantic hike.
  8. Firewood, charcoal, etc. If your cabin comes with a wood-burning fireplace or charcoal grill, you’ll need supplies. You can also purchase firewood and charcoal at our rental office.
  9. Ice. Stop on the way in and grab a bag or two of ice, or stop at the Old Man’s Cave General store on your way in and sample one of their 24 flavors of ice cream.
  10. Hiking Shoes. Although the state parks are accessible for hikers of all skill levels, your feet will appreciate appropriate footwear  at the end of a long day of hiking.
  11. Camel Pack or Back Pack. Dehydration is no way to spend your vacation. A camel pack or back pack filled with water bottles is a must on your Hocking Hills adventure.
  12. Telescope. The Hocking Hills is one of the darkest places in the state of Ohio, which makes it a great spot for astronomy. If you like to star gaze, you’ll be glad you brought a telescope.
  13. Flashlight and batteries. You won’t want to wander around after dark without a flashlight—be sure to stock up on batteries.
  14. Toiletries. The cabins come with bath soap and shampoo, but be sure you have enough of your regular toiletries to last you through your stay.
  15. Sunscreen and bug spray. You are vacationing out in nature, after all.
  16. Medications. Pack your inhaler, pills, and any other medications you might need. It’s also not a bad idea to bring some Tylenol, hydrocortisone cream in case of bug bites, and aloe vera for sunburns.
  17. Scrapbook or journal. Bring a scrapbook or a journal so you can record your memories and collect mementos like leaves and postcards.
  18. Board games and playing cards. Playing games is one of the top family vacation activities. Some of our cabins have game rooms, but it’s still a good idea to pack your favorite board games, or at least a few decks of cards.
  19. DVDs. Our cabins have DVD players, so bring something to put in them. We have some to barrow, but our selection is limited.
  20. Books and magazines. Plan to spend some time every day enjoying a good book over your morning coffee. How often do you get to do that at home?
  21. Swimsuits and beach towels. There is a public pool in Hocking Hills State Park and designated swimming areas in local lakes. All of our cabins also feature outdoor hot tubs and a shared pool, some have their own private pool.
  22. Sports equipment. Fishing gear, baseball gloves and balls, Frisbees—bring along any recreational items you might want. We have a great field for activities, and a volleyball net to challenge your friends.
  23. Binoculars. Birding is one of the top activities, especially in Hocking Hills State Park, so you’ll definitely want a pair of binoculars.
  24. Camera. Southeast Ohio is home to some of the country’s most spectacular landscapes. You’ll want photos.
  25. Phone charger. Especially if you are using your cellphone as your camera, don’t forget your charger.
