Old Man’s Cave

Old Man’s Cave is one of the most popular sights in Hocking Hills, but it’s also home to one of the most famous ghost stories in the region. As legend has it, in the early 1900s, two boys followed a mysterious man and his dog to the cave, where they found remains of a 1700s trapper named Retzler.

Today, the man and his dog continue to be spotted around the cave entrance. As you are hiking to the cave, make sure to keep your eyes open for the grey-haired man still roaming the hills.

Ash Cave

Old Man’s Cave isn’t the only cave with ghost stories. Near Ash Cave, a pale lady dressed in 1920s clothing has been spotted peeking around trees and following hikers down the trail. Explore the trail to Ash Cave, and you might just encounter the pale lady during your fall hike.

Moonville Tunnel

One of the most haunted places in Ohio, Moonville Tunnel, is a must-visit for any fans of the paranormal. The tunnel is named after an old mining and railroad community that sprang up in the 1800s. At the time, many residents used the tunnel to travel from one town to another, and several deaths occurred while the railway was still in operation. Although no one lives here anymore, the legends and history of this tunnel and community remain.

The first tragedy struck in the 1800s when two trains collided and an engineer was killed. Tragedy continued when an older woman walking home on the tracks was struck, and a brakeman fell asleep on the tracks.

Find the tunnel within Zaleski State Forest along the Vinton County Rail Trail. Visit on your own or check for guided tours available during your visit.
