Rockbridge State Nature Preserve

Rockbridge State Nature Preserve is one of many places of outstanding natural beauty in and around Hocking Hills, Ohio. The highlight definitely has to be the rock bridge, a 100 foot long rock formation in the shape of a bridge. This among many others is the geology that makes these places so fascinating.

Rockbridge State Nature Preserve itself can be found a short drive off Route 33 southeast of Rockbridge. It can be difficult to find, so look for Dalton Road on the 33, then follow it for almost a mile, until you reach the parking lot on the left with a Rockbridge sign. That’s it.

The area sits within a huge swathe of forest, National Parks and wilderness that make up the Hocking Hills area. Each of these sites alone is worth the trip to Ohio, but combined, they make a vacation to remember if you love the outdoors. Other highlights include Hocking Hills State Park, Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, Ash Cave, Cantwell Cliffs and Rock House. Each is, in its own right, amazing.

There is a 1.75 mile loop that goes around Rockbridge State Nature Preserve, that includes the rock bridge. The trail is suitable for many abilities, but can get muddy in the wet. There is also a fair bit of uphill, so wear sturdy shoes.

Depending on the time of year you visit, there will be a huge variety of wild flowers and plants spread along the route, with more in the forested area. You can’t help but smile if you walk this trail during spring as nature seems so happy to be back, it’s an awesome time to come here.

The rock bridge itself is formed out of the Blackhand sandstone typical for the area. It began life as a cave and was gradually eroded away by water to form this amazing rock bridge. The braver among you can make it across with ease. Again, depending on the time of year, you might come across the seasonal waterfall that flows behind the bridge into the stream below. It is simply amazing!

Once across the bridge you can take in the scene from another angle, or walk down to the Hocking River. There is also a smaller trail, called the Rock Shelter Trail just off the main loop. This will take you to the river, two more caves and another waterfall.

While not the biggest area in the world, there is a lot to see in Rockbridge State Nature Preserve. The rock bridge alone makes the trip worthwhile, but taking in the caves, flowers and the Hocking River makes this a great day out for everyone.
