Summer Activities in Hocking Hills

Summer is probably the reason Hocking Hills made Buzzfeed’s list of top destinations to visit in 2014. Especially for nature enthusiasts, southeast Ohio in summer is as close to paradise as you can imagine. There are so many ways to explore Hocking Hills in summer that it is impossible to describe them all here. But, we’ll try.

Buckeye Trail1

By Foot

Hiking is the number one activity in Hocking Hills, and summer is the one of the best times to see the spectacular landscape in all its glory. Hocking Hills State Park contains miles of trails, from beginner to advanced, that take hikers past the natural rock formations that put this region on the map. During summer, the park’s abundant flora and fauna are on display for all to see, so be sure to bring a camera and keep your eye out for wildlife. To learn about Hocking Hills’ rich history, take a naturalist-guided tour through the park.

Touch the Earth Adventures1

By Water

Water sports and activities are big business in Hocking Hills. Hocking River and the various lakes throughout the area provide opportunities for both boating and swimming. Grab your fishing gear and launch your boat on Lake Logan; canoe, kayak, raft, or tube down Hocking River; or swim in the local lakes. The public pool at Hocking Hills State Park is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

By Air

One of the most popular ways to experience Hocking Hills is from the air. Buzz from tree to tree on a canopy tour, speed across rivers and gorges on a zipline, or take a private plane tour. These attractions are popular and fill up quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

By Road or Rail

Explore Hocking Hills at your own pace on a self-guided driving or bicycle tour. From historic Routes 33 and 550 to Fairfield County’s 18 covered bridges, to the 20 historic quilt barns in Athens County, there is plenty to see! Or you can leave the driving to the conductor and take a ride on Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. Trains depart the Nelsonville depot regularly, winding through historic towns and giving you a unique vantage point you can’t find anywhere else.

Festivals

Finally, whether you live in the area or are just coming for a visit, you won’t want to miss the summer festivals. Every year, local musicians, artists, and craftspeople gather throughout Hocking Hills for various events that highlight and support the local community. Every June, downtown Logan welcomes the Washboard Music Festival; July brings flower and craft show Lilyfest, as well as Lancaster Festival, which is the largest music festival in Ohio; and August features the four-day Parade of the Hills in Nelsonville, which attracts as many as 50,000 visitors annually. There are also free concerts and movies in the park throughout the summer.
