Hiking Around Cantwell Cliffs

Cantwell Cliffs in Hocking Hills is one of a number of superb hiking areas that offer a bit of a challenge but a lot of reward. The Cantwell Cliffs area is probably one of Hocking Hills’ most scenic areas and a must-see for anyone visiting the area.

The area that includes Cantwell Cliffs is a little way off the tourist trail, so is often the best place to go for some solitude. Located some 17 miles away from Old Man’s Cave, it is well worth a visit if you have the time. The region sits inside Hocking Hills State Park, so is protected and looked after.

The cliffs themselves are sandstone edifices that have been carved out over millennia by water erosion. The highlight of a visit to Cantwell Cliffs is walking through the valley between the cliffs and admiring the fractures and crevices all along the path. The East Rim Trail takes you around the top of the cliffs over to Lookout Point.

The cliffs stand about 150 feet high and are one of our natural marvels. Buck Run, the waterway credited with creating Cantwell Cliffs still pours water over the cliff as a waterfall, which can get quite dramatic after the rains. There is also a natural amphitheater formed by the cliffs arranged in a horseshoe shape that makes for some interesting echoes!

Visit in spring to make the most of the new season bloom. Wildflowers abound in and around the cliffs, while animals and birds begin their yearly cycle. Visiting in fall is also very rewarding, as the forest surrounding the area show off the full majesty of their final display of the year. In fact, visiting any time of the year is rewarding as there is always something to see.

Hocking Hills State Park is open dawn until dusk every day and there is no entrance fee. The park is one of many attractions in and around Hocking Hills.
