Safety Tips for Swimming in Hocking Hills Lakes

Swimming is one of the top summer activities in Hocking Hills. We recently profiled the top places to swim in and around the region, most of which are lakes located in various state parks across southeast Ohio. Though these are public beaches that attract many families all year long, they are also “swim at your own risk” areas. This means that there is not a lifeguard on duty to watch for emergencies or perform rescues if necessary.

If you and your family are planning a swimming outing at any of the local hotspots, first take a moment to review these lake swimming safety tips.

Make sure it’s safe to go in

Though the lakes around Hocking Hills are usually pristine, there are times when swimming should be avoided. Before you head to the beach, double-check the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website to see if there are any safety announcements related to your destination. And never, ever go into a lake if you can see algae blooming on the surface. These algae produce cyanobacteria, which is toxic.

Follow the rules

Read and follow the posted swimming rules. This includes staying within the designated swimming areas and not taking glass bottles or other breakable items onto a public beach.

Assess the water and weather conditions

Before you go in, check the temperature of the water, look for any fast-moving currents, and identify any hazards such as rocks or debris. Also look around to see if you will be sharing the lake with people engaging in other activities, such as boating. Finally, check the weather forecast for any signs of severe weather—should a thunder and lightning storm happen to hit, you don’t want to be in the lake.

Never swim alone, and keep a close eye on children

Even in a crowded lake, always be sure you know where your children are and that someone knows where you are. Know the swimming abilities of everyone in your party, and never let anyone go off alone. Weaker swimmers should wear a lifejacket or other flotation device.

Watch for signs of overheating and overexertion

Summer in Ohio can get hot, and when it does overheating can occur quickly, especially in children. Bring a beach umbrella or some other form of shade, carry plenty of fresh drinking water, and avoid overexertion.
